Christianity: Critiquing Christianity

About Agnosticism and Atheism - Sat, 07/31/2010 - 07:00
When criticizing Christianity, what is it that we criticize? Are we only attacking a 'false' form of Christianity, ignoring the 'True Christianity' which is immune to such comments? That is ...

Atheists Draw Stick Figures; Christians Burn Qurans

About Agnosticism and Atheism - Sat, 07/31/2010 - 04:00
In Gainesville, Florida, the non-denominational Dove World Outreach Center is planning an "International Burn A Quran Day" to commemorate the 9th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The church insists that "Islam is of the devil" and thus such protest events are integral to their overall Christian mission.

Compare and contrast this with atheists who do nothing more than draw stick figures of Muhammad and get lambasted by religious theists for being too militant, intolerant, etc. Which is really worse?

Debates Over Microevolution & Macroevolution

About Agnosticism and Atheism - Sat, 07/31/2010 - 00:00

The basic scientific perspective on macroevolution and microevolution is that macroevolution is lots of microevolution over time, but there are other natural processes that influence the course of macroevolution. This isn't much of a revelation because there are all sorts of natural processes that influence the course of microevolution as well. This doesn't change the fact that microevolution is fundamentally the operation of natural selection, mutation, genetic drift, and gene flow.

Should You Reveal Your Atheism to Friends & Neighbors?

About Agnosticism and Atheism - Fri, 07/30/2010 - 07:00

David Walker: It's Arrogant Not to Believe in My God

About Agnosticism and Atheism - Fri, 07/30/2010 - 04:00
It's common for Christians to complain that atheism is arrogant and, therefore, that atheists are arrogant. Why are atheists supposed to be arrogant? Because we reject their god -- but somehow, it's not arrogant for Christians to reject all the other gods that humans have believed in. It's only atheists who get this label and thus only atheists who are supposed to change their ways.

This is consistent with many, many other cases of privileged majorities attacking minorities simply for doing nothing different than what the majority is accustomed to doing. It's the privileged attacking others for daring to assert any sort of equality.

Skepticism & Atheism in Ancient Rome

About Agnosticism and Atheism - Fri, 07/30/2010 - 00:00

The philosophy of Rome owed much to Greece, and so it is not surprising to find some of the same critical themes later taken up by Roman writers and philosophers. In fact, it's hard to find much that's entirely new and original in Roman philosophy -- the Romans tended to eschew speculative philosophy in favor of more practical concerns regarding morality and how to live a good life. Even here, though, they tended to lean heavily on Greek writings.
