Atheists Draw Stick Figures; Christians Burn Qurans
In Gainesville, Florida, the non-denominational Dove World Outreach Center is planning an "International Burn A Quran Day" to commemorate the 9th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The church insists that "Islam is of the devil" and thus such protest events are integral to their overall Christian mission.
Compare and contrast this with atheists who do nothing more than draw stick figures of Muhammad and get lambasted by religious theists for being too militant, intolerant, etc. Which is really worse?

Debates Over Microevolution & Macroevolution
The basic scientific perspective on macroevolution and microevolution is that macroevolution is lots of microevolution over time, but there are other natural processes that influence the course of macroevolution. This isn't much of a revelation because there are all sorts of natural processes that influence the course of microevolution as well. This doesn't change the fact that microevolution is fundamentally the operation of natural selection, mutation, genetic drift, and gene flow.

David Walker: It's Arrogant Not to Believe in My God
It's common for Christians to complain that atheism is arrogant and, therefore, that atheists are arrogant. Why are atheists supposed to be arrogant? Because we reject their god -- but somehow, it's not arrogant for Christians to reject all the other gods that humans have believed in. It's only atheists who get this label and thus only atheists who are supposed to change their ways.
This is consistent with many, many other cases of privileged majorities attacking minorities simply for doing nothing different than what the majority is accustomed to doing. It's the privileged attacking others for daring to assert any sort of equality.

Skepticism & Atheism in Ancient Rome
The philosophy of Rome owed much to Greece, and so it is not surprising to find some of the same critical themes later taken up by Roman writers and philosophers. In fact, it's hard to find much that's entirely new and original in Roman philosophy -- the Romans tended to eschew speculative philosophy in favor of more practical concerns regarding morality and how to live a good life. Even here, though, they tended to lean heavily on Greek writings.

Fleeing the Enlightenment
Because atheism is more common and accepted in Europe, we don't see the problem there of Christians (usually liberal and moderate) complaining that critics of religion are really just "fundamentalist atheists" who are too "intolerant" and "strident" to be taken seriously. Yet, almost exactly the same phenomenon is happening in Europe -- but instead of these attacks being directed against atheists who are publicly critical of religion generally, they are people applied to people like Hirsi Ali who are critical of Islam in particular and patriarchal religion generally.

Weekly Poll: Which of the Atheist Bus Ads or Billboards Do You Like Best?
">
Religious apologists keep insisting that atheists are being offensive, rude, insensitive, and even "militant" for purchasing billboards and bus advertisements to communicate the fact that they exist, the fact that there is nothing wrong with atheism, and even that people should reconsider religious theism. These ads have sparked a lot of positive interest in the atheist community -- but which one do you like best? Which one do you think is most effective? The critical reactions from religious apologists come regardless of what the ads say, which indicate that the problem for apologists is that atheists are speaking out at all, not that they are speaking out with an inappropriate tone or message. These reactions are, I think, best explained by fear -- but fear of what? Are they afraid that the more people learn about atheists and atheism, the harder it will be for religious leaders to preserve the stigma that they have managed to attach to disbelief? Are they afraid that when atheists stake out an equal place in the public square, then they might not be able to compete?

Polish Catholic Church Losing Members, Credibility
Poland has long been one of the most Catholic nations in Europe, but today it's experiencing the sort of reduction in loyalty to the Catholic church which one normally sees in more secularized western European nations. The reason seems to be how problems with priests sexually abusing children -- and especially Catholic leaders covering it up -- has spread to Poland. The scandal isn't as extensive there as it is elsewhere, but it's been enough.

Forum Discussion: Ever Wonder if Christians are Right?
It's common for theists -- but especially Christians -- to ask atheists "but what if Christianity is right?" Their assumption seems to be that if their god exists, then people would naturally have to become Christians. That, however, is not a conclusion which follows necessarily from the premise. Just because Christianity is "true" in some sense does not entail becoming a Christian. After all, what if you find the Christian system to be barbaric, immoral, and unreasonable?

Religion Really is an Opiate? Religion as Anti-Anxiety, Anti-Error-Response
Did you know that you have an anterior cingulate cortex? Well, you do -- we all do. It's a small region of the brain, but it does something that can be very important: it makes you anxious and uneasy when you think you've made a mistake. It's called "error response negativity" and while none of use likes anxiety or to think we've made a mistake, it's like pain: it's useful, if we use it properly.
Curiously, religion seems to suppress error response negativity, which is to say that it suppresses the anxiety we should be feeling when confronting information that contradicts our beliefs and thus should be causing us to reconsider our positions. Who knew: maybe religion really is an anti-anxiety opiate. If Marx were alive today, he might change his text to say that religion is the Xanax of the masses. Religion Really is an Opiate? Backlash Against Atheists: As Real as Gods
I wrote recently about a poll which shows that 18% of Americans accept that humans evolved naturally, without any divine or supernatural intervention or guidance. That's a pathetically low number, but it's still an improvement because in 1999 it was only 9%. So the situation appears to be improving, even if slowly. There is one interesting question raised by these numbers: where is that "backlash" against evolution which has supposedly been created by atheists criticizing religion?

Book of the Week: Jihad in the West: Muslim Conquests from the 7th to the 21st Centuries
Is there any real relationship between the Muslim military campaigns of previous centuries and the recent terrorism campaigns? Paul Fregosi argues that there is -- both are reflections of a fundamental antagonism to the non-Muslim world, and in particular to the economically and militarily powerful West.
